PAKISTAN — Mullah Offers Reward for Killing Asia Bibi — VOM Contacts

On Dec. 3, 2010, a mullah in Pakistan offered more than $6,000 (U.S.) to anyone who kills Asia Bibi, according to The Voice of the Martyrs contacts. In the past, Christians have been killed in jail, on their way to court and even after being released from jail. “There is threat that she can be killed even after her releasing from the jail,” said VOM contacts in Pakistan. “It’s not just a statement by mulana, but we have examples of previous blasphemy cases.” Following the mullah’s statement, Muslims protested against Asia and a proposed amendment of the blasphemy law. Protests were held in many major cities in Pakistan. Pray for Asia’s release from prison and for her safety after her release. Ask God to minister to her family, especially her children.

Matthew 5:10

AZERBAIJAN — Government Considers Stiffer Penalties for Religious Activity — Forum 18 News

Less than two years after increasing penalties for illegal religious activity, parliamentary deputies are about to consider even harsher penalties in proposed amendments to the Code of Administrative Offences, according to Forum 18 News Service. “Minimum fines for individuals violating the Religion Law, such as by holding unregistered religious worship, could be increased fifteen-fold,” Forum 18 reported. Rabiyat Aslanova, chair of parliament’s Human Rights Committee, told Forum 18 News, “This is connected with religious communities which have failed to gain re-registration but still function. It’s so that they realize the responsibility for their actions. People are not fined just for praying to God. This is a question of national security.” Pray that these amendments will not pass. Ask God to protect believers who continue to worship him openly despite oppressive government restrictions.

2 Thessalonians 1:4-6

CHINA — Christian Lawyer Still Missing — China Aid Association

Christian human rights attorney Gao Zhisheng has been imprisoned by Chinese authorities for more than two years, and his whereabouts are currently unknown, according to China Aid Association. In an October radio interview, Gao’s wife, Geng He, expressed her family’s eagerness to find him. “My family only wants to get some news of him,” Geng He said. “When I talked with his sister, she said, ‘He is a member of the family. No matter what he does, such as eating the daily meals, sleeping or even taking a walk outside, anything would make us miss him. Where on earth has he gone? The entire family of mine is puzzled and we have been looking for him ever since.’” Pray that Gao will continue to look to the Lord for strength and guidance, and pray that God will comfort his family and enable them to persevere in hope and faith. Pray that the Church in China will continue to shine the light of God’s love and truth and that it will continue to grow despite opposition from some government officials.

Matthew 5:44

Please remember these in prayer.

VOM–USA Prayer Update for October 1, 2010

The Voice of the Martyrs USA: www.persecution.com

Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the LORD! psalm 27:14PAKISTAN — Bibles, Hymnals and Church Property Burned — VOM Contacts

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.

On Sept. 19, Islamic extremists broke into the Philadelphia Pentecostal Church in Sharif Town, Karachi City, Pakistan, and set fire to Bibles, hymnals, a musical instrument and a table, according to The Voice of the Martyrs contacts. The church, which is led by Pastors George Rakha and Peter Shahzad, was established six years ago and is actively involved in Muslim evangelism. “At 4 a.m., some fanatics broke the lock of the church door and entered the church,” VOM contacts reported. “They burned three crosses, nine Bibles, five books of worship songs, a table and a musical instrument Tabla [local drum].” On Sept. 20, the Christian community displayed a banner protesting the burning of their Bibles. Christians believe this incident was a reaction to an American pastor’s widely publicized threat to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11. Christian leaders in the U.S. spoke out against the pastor’s plan to burn the Quran, and he ultimately decided against it. But it seems that no Muslim leaders spoke out against the burning of Bibles in Pakistan. Pray for believers in Pakistan who courageously live for Christ in the midst of opposition. Pray that believers’ testimonies and love for Christ will draw their Muslim neighbors into fellowship with Christ.

IRAN — Nine Believers Arrested — Farsi Christian News Network

Acts 4:29–31

“Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, 30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

Nine Christians were arrested recently in Hamedan, Iran, on charges of engaging in journalistic activities, according to Farsi Christian News Network (FCNN). Iranian state television reported that two of those arrested were supported by organizations from the United States and Great Britain, but their nationalities are unknown. The other seven were reportedly accused of cooperating with “Christian-Zionist organizations.” The Iranian government uses this terminology to describe Christians who have access to a number of evangelistic networks and TV satellite programs. FCNN concluded that this is the first time in three decades that state TV has broadcast news about the arrest of Christians. Pray that God will equip these believers to share the gospel while in prison, and pray for their release. Pray that the increased persecution in Iran will result in increased boldness among Christians.

CHINA — Pastor Detained at Trial of House Church Leaders — China Aid Association

Romans 5:10–12

For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation. Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.

Pastor “Bike” Zhang Mingxuan and his wife, along with several other believers, were detained on Sept. 20 while attending court proceedings for imprisoned Christians Liu Yunhua and Gao Jianli in Xuchang, Henan province, according to China Aid Association. Pastor Zhang, who has been imprisoned previously, was released a few hours later with his wife. Other Christians, including the son of defendant Liu Yunhua, were detained by authorities on their way home from the trial. At last report, these believers were still in detention. Pray for the release of the detained believers, and pray that God will grant patience and faith to Liu and Gao throughout their trial. Ask God to continue to equip and embolden Pastor Zhang in his ministry.

VOM–USA Prayer Update for August 27, 2010

The Voice of the Martyrs USA: www.persecution.com

But the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; He is their strength in the time of trouble. And the LORD shall help them and deliver them; He shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in Him. Psalm 37:39–40

Psalm 23:1–5

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.

On July 13, the family of Uyghur house–church leader, Alimujiang Yimiti, was permitted to visit him for 20 minutes, according to China Aid Association. Alimujiang’s family was relieved to see him alive, as guards had repeatedly refused to allow them visits in recent weeks. During their meeting, Alimujiang confirmed that he had received his wife’s letters. However, only one of his letters has been delivered to his wife, and he warned her that she and the children should not expect to see more letters from him because of the difficulty he had in sending them. In 2009, Alimujiang was sentenced to 15 years in prison for ‘providing state secrets to overseas organizations.” Thank God that Alimujiang was able to visit with his family, and pray that authorities will continue to allow the visits. Pray that God will protect and comfort his family and that his testimony might draw other prisoners and guards to Christ.

TANZANIA — Christian Evangelists Acquitted — Compass Direct News

2 Timothy 1:7–12

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.

On Aug. 12, a court acquitted two Tanzanian evangelists of “illegal preaching,” according to Compass Direct News. The evangelists, Eleutery Kobelo and Cecil Simbaulanga, were arrested in October 2009 after Muslims invited them to participate in a religious debate. The evangelists said that on the day of the debate, the Muslims arrived with government security agents. The government agents then charged the evangelists with “using religious sermons to incite Muslims and Christians into viewing each other with suspicion.” The Muslims claimed that the evangelists’ gospel message had annoyed Muslims, disrupting the peaceful coexistence between the two faiths. During 10 months of hearings, the Muslims reportedly failed to show up in court to support their allegations against the evangelists. “We are grateful that the court has done justice and made its ruling based on Tanzania’s constitution that allows for freedom of religion and assembly,” Eleutery said. “We thank the Christians worldwide for praying for us.” Praise God that these Christians have been acquitted. Pray that Eleutery, Cecil and believers throughout Tanzania will trust fully in Christ and continue to preach the gospel without hesitation.

BELARUS — Pastor Fined for Sharing the Gospel — Forum 18 News

Hebrews 10:32–34

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.”Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

The pastor of a village church in Belarus was recently fined three times in one day for sharing his faith, according to Forum 18 News Service. “We resolved to suffer for God,” said Pastor Viktor Novik, who decided not to appeal the fines. According to authorities, Pastor Novik “understands that to hold events, appropriate permission is needed.” Pastor Novik told Forum 18 that he had applied several times for permission to rent a building for meetings and to share the gospel, but that authorities had denied his requests. Praise God for Pastor Novik’s faithfulness. Ask God to provide for and protect his family and congregation.

But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name Be joyful in You. For You, O LORD, will bless the righteous; With favor You will surround him as with a shield.

On July 4, unknown assailants attacked a college professor, severing his right hand and part of his arm in Kerala, India. According to The Voice of the Martyrs contacts T.J. Joseph, a professor at Newman’s College in Thodupuzha, was returning from a Sunday service at his church when a van pulled up beside him. The assailants forced him from his car and attacked him with knives and swords, amputating his lower arm and inflicting deep wounds to his body. At last report, doctors were attempting to save his limb. According to reports, several Muslim students were offended by test questions on an exam T.J. Joseph gave two months ago. After protests by Islamic groups, T.J. was suspended from his job and apologized for his “unintentional error.” Nevertheless, he continued to receive threats. T.J.’s assailants in the July 4 attack are suspected to be members of the Islamic militant group, the Popular Front of India, but the attack was condemned by other Islamic groups. The media in India reported that T.J. Joseph forgave his attackers. Praise God T.J. has forgiven his persecutors. Pray for his full and speedy recovery. Pray that the misunderstanding which led to the attack will be resolved. Pray for peace among India’s religious communities.

Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

On July 5, Behnam Sabti, a Christian, died instantly when a bomb exploded under his car in Mosul, Iraq. According to local reports, Behnam was killed because of his “religious identity.” In recent months, Christians and other religious minorities in Iraq have faced violence because of their beliefs. Pray for Behnam’s wife and three children as they mourn the loss of husband and father. Pray that those responsible for this attack will be found and brought to justice. Pray for peace in Iraq and that Christians will be able to live their faith in freedom. Pray Christians will forgive their persecutors.

Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
In recent months, Christians in Bekasi, Indonesia have faced growing opposition from Muslim extremists opposed to “Christianization,” according to Compass Direct News. Compass reported that on June 27, Muslim organizations in Bekasi announced they would establish “paramilitary units in local mosques” to oppose “ongoing attempts to convert people to Christianity.” Muslims have accused Christians of “aggressive proselytizing.” Church services throughout the city have been interrupted repeatedly and Christians have been threatened. In June, the Bekasi Islamic Congress met and set up a “mission center” along with a youth army to oppose Christian efforts. There is also a push for Shariah law in the region. Pray for protection for Christians in Bekasi. Pray the authorities will protect the Christians against opposition from militant Islamic groups.

Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.”’

On May 31, Christian human rights attorney Li Heping was arrested in Beijing and taken to Beipingfang Village Police Station for interrogation, according to China Aid Association. Li Heping, who in the past has been under heavy police surveillance, was arrested as he left the home of fellow attorney Tang Jitian. Police took Li Heping to the police station for interrogation and released him later that night. The police claim they arrested Li Heping on suspicion of burglary, but their intentions were clearly to gain information on Tang Jitian’s whereabouts. On April 12, the government revoked the lawyer’s licenses of Tang Jitian and his friend Liu Wei, supposedly for causing a disturbance in the courtroom. The arrest and interrogation of Li Heping on “suspicion of burglary” is further evidence of how the Chinese government intimidates human rights attorneys. Pray that God will protect and encourage Li Heping and Tang Jitian. Praise God for the faithfulness of believers in China who continue to live out their faith in the midst of persecution.

On May 25, Turkish Christians Hakan Tastan and Turan Topal appeared in court for their 11th hearing on charges of “insulting Turkishness” by allegedly trying to convert others to Christianity, according to Compass Direct News. The hearing lasted only a few minutes. Despite the lack of evidence against the men, the Silivri Criminal Court set another hearing for Oct. 14. Prosecutors have yet to present any concrete evidence for the charges, and Hakan and Turan hope the trial concludes by the end of the year. “From the beginning, the charges against us have been filled with contradictions,” Turan said. “But we are entirely innocent of all these charges, so of course we expect a complete acquittal.” Thank the Lord for the bold faith of these two believers. Pray that God will be their strength and guide and that the charges against them will be dropped.

Some Christians who were displaced during the 2008 riots in Orissa state are still homeless, according to VOM contacts in India. During the riots, 90 were killed and 50,000 believers were displaced. VOM contacts say the Christians who are still homeless will be adversely affected by the upcoming monsoon season. Pray that homes will become available to these displaced Christians. Ask God to encourage and protect believers who have endured hardship since the attacks.

Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.” So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do?” Then the Lord said to him, “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice but seeing no one. Then Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened he saw no one. But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank. Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him the Lord said in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” So the Lord said to him, “Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying. And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight.” Then Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.” But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.” And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized.

On May 19, Muslim youths destroyed two church buildings and a pastor’s house in Northern Nigeria, according to The Voice of the Martyrs contacts. “A Christian pastor received a phone call from one of the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) missionaries, Gambo Mato, serving in a village called Kwasam, … Kano state, saying, ‘Muslim youths are now destroying my house and our church buildings; they have set my house and the church ablaze,’” VOM contacts said. The Muslim youths burned and destroyed both the new and old churches as well as the pastor’s house. “They also attacked the Christians in the village with sticks, clubs, knives and bow and arrows, but the Christians, who are mostly natives of the place, … escaped with their lives, leaving few injured,” VOM contacts said. “Praise God no one was killed.” Believers in Nigeria think the Muslims attacked because locals are converting to Christianity and Muslims do not want churches in the area. This is the latest in the ongoing attacks against believers in Nigeria. The Voice of the Martyrs stands with persecuted Christians in Nigeria and encourages you to pray for believers in this area. Pray that in the face of their terrible suffering, God’s grace will be sufficient. Pray that God will change the hearts and minds of the Muslim youths involved in these attacks, and pray for lasting peace in Nigeria.

On May 21, members of the Indonesia Christian Church (GKI) visited the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to report that local officials had stopped construction of the GKI’s building in Bogor City, Indonesia, and sealed the building, according to the Indonesian news site kompas.com and The Voice of the Martyrs contacts. Church members told the NHRC that local government officials had banned their Christian activities, sealed their building and revoked their building license in February 2008. The Christians met with Johny Nelson Simanjuntak, the Investigation and Observation Commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission. “There is an effort of hindering and forbidding people to do their religious activities and building their building of prayer,” Simanjuntak told kompas.com and members of the press following the meeting. “All the building procedures were already fulfilled by the church. They had received the license from the local government, and they applied the license based on the right procedures,” Simanjuntak said. He added that the NHRC had followed up with local officials but had not yet received a reply. Pray for a speedy resolution of this issue. Pray that believers will remain faithful and committed to Christ during this challenging time.

Moroccan officials have expelled more than 100 Christians in recent months. According to Moroccan law, foreigners who have lived in the country for more than 10 years cannot be deported unless they are accused of a crime. They also have the right to appeal the deportation order within 48 hours. However, Christians deported in recent months have been given only a few hours’ notice before being escorted to the country’s exit ports. Very few believers have been able to appeal their deportation order. Moroccan officials cite “proselytism” as the reason for the deportations. Pray for the deported believers and their families, and pray that God will encourage and protect all believers in Morocco.

On March 28, human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, who has been missing for more than a year, contacted his wife and children, according to ChinaAid Association. Gao’s wife, Geng He, and children were relieved to hear from him after such a long time. Geng He hopes her husband can rejoin the family in the United States soon. In recent months, rumors had circulated that Gao had died of torture at the hands of Chinese officials. “Gao’s brief phone conversations with western media on Sunday mark the first official contact the public has had with him since his abduction by police on Feb. 4, 2009,” ChinaAid reported. Gao told the Associated Press and Reuters news agencies that he was released from Chinese custody six months ago and taken to Wutai Shan mountain, a Buddhist landmark in Shanxi province. He declined to give other details on his condition, saying legally he could not give interviews.VOM encourages you to pray that Gao will be able to rejoin his family. Praise God that Gao is safe for now, and ask God to encourage him and his family during this challenging time. Pray that God will give Gao the grace to forgive his persecutors, and pray that the Holy Spirit will minister to him.

On March 28, Rev. Wilson Issavi was temporarily released from Dastgard prison after posting bail, according to Farsi Christian News Network (FCNN). His charges are pending review by the court. Rev. Issavi, leader of the Pentecostal church in Kermanshah, was arrested in February and detained for 54 days by Iranian government officials. A month prior to his arrest, the Pentecostal church in Kermanshah was closed, and the pastor was told not to reopen it. “The Pentecostal Church of Kermanshah is one of the three churches that during the last year have been closed by the security forces of the government on the charges of attempting to convert Muslims to Christianity,” FCNN reported. Churches in Shahrara and Urumieh have also been shut down. The Pentecostal church, which is an old and historical building in need of repair, was used mainly for weekly Christian services. The Voice of the Martyrs has stood with Rev. Issavi and his family through these challenges. Pray that the charges against him will be dropped and that all Christians who are currently detained in Iran will be freed. Ask God to protect and minister to believers in Iran who risk their all for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell[a] in the house of the LORD Forever.

On March 6, Christian human rights lawyer Le Thi Cong Nhan was released from prison after serving a three-year sentence for “propagandizing to destroy the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.” Cong Nhan’s original four-year sentence was reduced by one year after an international outcry over her sentence. Now serving an additional three-year sentence of house arrest, Cong Nhan has stated that she has no intention of giving up her struggle for a just and free Vietnam and accepts that there may be a further price to pay. While in prison, she went on a hunger strike twice when authorities took her Bible away from her. Thank the Lord that Cong Nhan has been released from prison. Pray that she will look to Christ for strength and grace as she faces three years of house arrest.

And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. I have become a fool in boasting; you have compelled me. For I ought to have been commended by you; for in nothing was I behind the most eminent apostles, though I am nothing.

Uzbekistan’s government continues to fine members of the Baptist Union and harass Protestant Christians, according to Forum 18 News. “Valery Konovalov has been forced to pay a fine, after he was forced to appear as a witness in the trial of three leaders of the Baptist Union,” Forum 18 reported. “The three have themselves been forced to pay what the same court claimed was unpaid taxes, and two were removed from their posts.” In addition, the parents of children who attend Protestant schools in Uzbekistan have been warned to stop attending church. “The children were made to write statements promising that they would stop attending churches,” a Christian told Forum 18. “People are afraid to talk to us when they find out we are Christians.” These incidents are the latest in the Uzbek government’s ongoing persecution of believers. VOM stands with Christians in Uzbekistan and encourages you to pray that charges against believers will be dropped. Ask God to encourage and protect believers and their families. Pray that their testimony of faithfulness will draw the authorities into fellowship with Christ.

I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.” Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence. A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked. Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place, No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.
On Feb. 28, Hamid and Reyhaneh, a former-Muslim couple who led a house church, were arrested by secret police in Isfahan, Iran, according to Farsi Christian News Network (FCNN). Twenty secret police officers arrested and assaulted Reyhaneh when she resisted. “Hamid was arrested when he returned home an hour later,” FCNN reported. “Other believers present at the time were threatened but not detained, though one was also assaulted when he protested [the arrests].” Police confiscated computers, telephones and literature, including many Bibles. On March 1, Hamid and Reyhaneh’s family contacted the authorities and were told their case would be referred to the Revolutionary Court once charges were finalized. The couple’s two teenage sons are being cared for by Reyhaneh’s sister. Pray that Hamid and Reyhaneh will be released and reunited with their sons. Pray that their sons will be comforted by the presence and peace of Jesus, and pray that Iranian believers will be encouraged. Pray that officials involved will act justly and that they might come to a saving faith in Jesus Christ.

In January, 48 Christians were forced from their homes in Katin village, Saravan province, Laos. After gathering for Sunday worship, the believers were expelled from their church at gunpoint and taken to an open field. Officials then confiscated personal belongings from 11 Christians’ homes, and six of the homes were later destroyed. Officials also took a pig, worth the equivalent of six weeks’ salary, from one of the believers. When the believers refused to renounce their faith, they were forced to leave the village. Police have been posted at the entrance to the village to prevent the Christians from returning home or retrieving their valuables. At last report, the believers were sleeping in the woods with little food or survival supplies. Ask God to protect and provide for the 48 Christians who were expelled. Pray that they will grow stronger in their faith. Also pray that the Christians who renounced their faith will turn to Jesus for strength and boldness. Pray that officials and villagers will stop persecuting Christians in Katin village.

Uzbek Christians from the Baptist Council of Churches have faced arrests and physical abuse in recent weeks. On Jan. 18, Tohar Haydarov was arrested in Syrdarya region on charges of producing or storing drugs — charges local Christians insist are fabricated. Police reportedly threatened Tohar and pressured him to renounce his faith. When he refused, police allegedly planted drugs on him. According to police reports, officials later found additional drugs at his apartment. However, the search was not monitored by witnesses. The drugs found on Tohar and in his apartment were tested the same evening, raising suspicions about how the drugs could have been tested so quickly. At a court hearing three days after his arrest, Tohar told believers that police had beaten him and forced him to sign papers. His face was swollen, and he could barely walk. At last report, police were trying to charge Tohar under an article of the Criminal Code that calls for a 10–20 year prison sentence. In another incident, a group of believers who gathered for fellowship on Jan. 24 in Almalyk City were rounded up by police and taken to the police station. The Christians had gathered at the home of Sergei Brislavski. Police searched Sergei’s home and confiscated Bibles, songbooks and CDs. Three of the 19 believers were treated roughly by officers. A doctor who saw them the next day said the believers had bruises on their shoulders and around their necks. Local Christians believe the police are preparing a criminal case against some of them for repeated violations of the Religion Law. In April 2009, some of the same Christians, including Sergei’s family, were fined 50 times the minimum monthly wage for “attracting believers of one confession to another.” Pray that the truth of Tohar’s case will be revealed and that he will look to Christ for strength. Pray that the Christians in Almalyk will echo Peter’s determination to obey God rather than man, and pray that they will not face criminal charges or fines.
